Established in 1926 and affiliated with the Institut pédagogique de Montréal, the École normale de musique, administered by the Sisters of the Congrégation de Notre-Dame, also welcomed several lay teachers who contributed to the renowned reputation of the school. Among them was Élie Robert Schmitz (1889-1949), a French musician, teacher and promoter of an innovative pedagogy for the study of piano.
