École Saint-Pierre
Institution founded in 1955, Alma, Québec.
n 1955, at the request of Mr. Louis-Philippe Bédard, Alma School Commission Director of Studies, Saint-Pierre School was entrusted to the Congrégation de Notre-Dame. Sister Saint-Alcide (Rose-Delima Gaudet) became the founder and director of this branch school of Saint-Joseph Convent. Because the school opened in November 1955, the school year began differently for the students. A “shifts” system was implemented with the students of Sainte-Thérèse School, a branch school of Saint-Joseph Convent. Depending upon the schedules, the students attended morning or afternoon classes. The new building, which contained eight classrooms on two floors, was located on Potvin Avenue. Education was provided by lay teachers. At the beginning of the next school year, in 1956, the teacher’s room became the Grade 1 classroom. The school received nine co-ed classes from Grade 1 to Grade 7. In 1957, the pastor, Father Léo Dufour, blessed the building. In that same year, the school fund was inaugurated. The Eucharistic Crusade was very active at the school and planned many activities. For example, in June 1958, it organized a crusaders’ Marian pilgrimage to Notre-Dame-de-Fatima Oratory in the school hall. Many real estate projects developed around the school, resulting in an increase in the student population. In 1958, the registration list contained two hundred sixty-two names. At the beginning of the 1959 school year, the school was too small to accommodate all the students who wanted to attend. Two classes were set up on the second floor of a house located on the extension of Levasseur and Saint-Pierre Streets; a third was set up in the basement of a house on Auger Boulevard. At the same time, because Saint-Pierre School was no longer under the direction of the Congrégation de Notre-Dame, a lay teacher was named director of the school.
