Charlo's Cove School
Institution founded in 1957, Larry's River (Larrys River), Nouvelle-Écosse.
On August 26, 1957, at the request of Bishop John R. MacDonald of Antigonish, two sisters of the Congrégation de Notre-Dame arrived in the small town of Charlo’s Cove, Nova Scotia to teach in the small parish school, a branch of Mount Carmel Convent-School. They were: Sister Saint John (Sarah McLeod), who was named Director, and Sister Saint Gregory (Margaret Hawrylak). On the first day of school, the sisters received sixty-three students in ten classes. The sisters were very much involved in the life of their students and of the town. Annual concerts were organized in celebration of the Christmas Holidays. Also, the students participated in the Guysborough music festival and in picnics organized by Charlo’s Cove’s Home and School Association. At that time, Charlo’s Cove was developing rapidly.
On September 26, 1961, a road connecting Charlo’s Cove and Larry’s River was built. This was a great improvement for the sisters who travelled back and forth between the two towns every day. In November 1961, the sisters began two 4H Clubs in the town, one for girls and one for boys. The girls learned sewing and the boys carpentry. Expositions were held annually in order to showcase the children’s accomplishments. On September 1, 1964, Charlo’s Cove School was completely repainted. Hygiene was an important element in the school’s administration. Every year, a nurse visited the school to screen the children and give them tips on hygiene. In May 1964, the children were even vaccinated against polio in order to prevent school closings because of illness, as had been the case on October 28, 1957, when Charlo’s Cove School was closed for one week. In 1966, the Guysborough School Board announced the permanent closing of Charlo’s Cove School and the transfer of the students to Larry’s River School.
