明治学園は、カトリック学校としてユニークな歴史をもっている。１９１０年安川　敬一郎氏と松本健次郎氏によって明治専門学校(現在は国立大学法人九州工業大学)の付属小学校として創立された。その当時の生徒数は２３名だった。
