Although the Congrégation de Notre-Dame was not present in France, it still obtained certain revenue. Even after France lost Canada to Great Britain 1763, the Community continued to receive substantial yearly annuities from France. French mediators, procurators, chargés d'affaires and benefactors provided various services to the Congregation: purchased and delivered supplies, administered goods or interceded with different officials.

To meet the ongoing needs of the Sisters, whose numbers continued to increase each year, and to provide some autonomy, the administrators of the Congrégation de Notre-Dame created several workshops. In time, the Mother House had shoe-repair, weaving, baking and “apothecary” workshops. Sisters, hired hands and servants worked to supply goods and services to the Sisters and the boarders. These activities are identified in several archival documents such as inventories and accounting ledgers, which date back to New France up to the middle of the 20th century.

The Sisters teaching in the missions were helped by the parish but they also provided for themselves. Among other tasks, they sewed and took care of the vestments, as this document shows.

While the Governor was the King’s representative in New-France, it was, in fact, the Intendent who ran the colony. He was responsible for finances, internal administration and the judicial system. In accordance with his functions, Intendent Gilles Hocquart forbade the inhabitants of Neuville, under penalty of fine, to cut trees on the lands of the Congrégation de Notre-Dame. The order was posted on the door of Saint-Charles Church so that the residents could not feign ignorance.

During the 18th century, fire destroyed several buildings in Montreal, among them Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel in 1754. The only object in the church that was spared was a small wooden statue of the Virgin and Child. The 16th century figurine, to which miracles are attributed, had been given to Marguerite Bourgeoys by Pierre Chevrier, Baron de Fancamp, during her journey to France in 1672. The statuette is found today in the chapel which was rebuilt in the very same place in 1771.

These pages from the record of boarder accounts show that students began classes at different times of the year: Françoise Garand entered the conventon September 28, Madeleine Colin, on February 1 and the two young Langlois sisters on August 22. At that time school calendars did not exist. Teaching was more personalized and the teachers moved around to meet the needs of small groups. Instruction began with learning how to read, which was closely connected to religion. Some children stayed in school only a few months, the time it took to receive their First Communion, learn how to spell, read prayers and write their names. Those who stayed longer, like the Langlois sisters, further developed their reading, writing and arithmetic skills as well as their ability to perform small manual tasks.

1768年4月11日、モントリオールで火災が発生し、88の家屋に延焼し、コングレガシオンの修道院も被害を受けました。この修道院は1683年に建てられ、サン・ジャン・バティスト通り、サン・ポール通り、ノートルダム通りの三叉路に面して位置していました。シスターたちはオテル・デュー病院に避難し、同じ場所に修道院を再建することになりました。授業がないシスターたちは毎朝出向き、焼け跡から回収できるものを探しました。このような悲劇はコングレガシオンの歴史を通じて、1683年、1768 年、 1893年と3度起き、その結果、大量の公文書が失われました。

The manuscripts of the reports on revenues and expenses identify several aspects of the everyday life of the Sisters and their students. These documents, listing purchases of materials and payments to workers, show the kind of building and maintenance work which was done for the convents: digging wells; covering convent roofs with shingles; whitewashing walls; putting down wood floors; cleaning chimneys; iron works and building milk houses. Filled with details, these documents specify all purchased items and disclose the residents’ daily diet.

The Sisters of the Congrégation de Notre-Dame paid taxes and rent, that is, dues to the seigneur who ceded land to them. The quittance, similar to a receipt, was written proof that the debtor had paid the required sum of money to the creditor. This document shows that Joseph Brassard Deschenaux, seigneur de Neuville, confirmed payment by the Sisters of the Congrégation for the year 1784.
