Saint Theresa School

Saint Theresa School, previously known as Holy Angels’ School, was established in 1890. When Saint Theresa Parish was established in 1930, the Sisters of the Congregation took charge of the school and annexed it to Notre Dame Convent, Ottawa. Sisters Sainte-Marie-Aloysia (Anna Murphy) and Elisabeth-Marie (Annie Elisabeth McDermott) received 50 students the first year in a two-room building on Waverley Street. In 1932, the building was renovated and 4 classes were added. In 1952, a kindergarten class was opened. In 1953, the school became overcrowded. Because of the lack of space, full-day classes were compressed into half-day classes and the various groups of students attended either morning or afternoon sessions. Finally, two classrooms were set up in the church basement and in other locations and new teachers were hired. At the beginning of the 1954–1955 school year, some classes were transferred to Christ the King School. Between 1956 and 1959, additional extension work was done. In 1962, two neighbouring houses were demolished permitting the school to have a playground. The Sisters ceased administering the school in the summer of 1971.
